In 1952, Price was discovered by record producer, Art Rupe who was on a visit to New Orleans, after hearing Price’s song “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, Rupe wanted to produce it. Backed by a band, Price recorded the song and ultimately went to Number One on the charts. From 1952-2012 Price released 16 studio albums and released over 30 singles including “Stagger Lee”, “Oooh-Oooh-Oooh”, “Restless Heart”, “Ain’t It a Shame”, “Lady Luck”, “I’m Gonna Get Married”, “Just Because”, “Come Into My Heart”, and “Personality”, from which he was given the name “Mr. Personality.”

Lloyd Price died at a long-term care facility in New Rochelle, New York, of complications from diabetes last Monday, according to his wife. He was 88. Price wrote “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” based on a local DJ’s favorite catchphrase. He wrote the song “Stagger Lee” about a real-life 19th century fight between two Black men over a game of dice that ended with one man dead. When “Stagger Lee” became a hit in 1959, Dick Clark thought the song was too violent for “American Bandstand” and pushed Price to change it. The “Bandstand” version had the men peaceably resolving their dispute tht over a woman. Price told Billboard in 2013 the song became “ridiculous” and did not make sense at all.

Along with Fats Domino and David Bartholomew among others, Price fashioned a deep, exuberant sound around the brass and swing of New Orleans jazz and blues that placed high on R&B charts and eventually crossed over to white audiences.

Influential R&B singer/songwriter Price’s widow, Jackie, confirmed in a statement to  Billboard that he passed away on May 3 at an extended-care facility in Westchester County, New York. “Lloyd’s music crossed many boundaries and carried him to all corners of the world,” she wrote. “He got the nickname ‘Mr. Personality’ because of his biggest hit but he also earned that name because he was charismatic, generous, smart, funny, talented with a very kind heart.” Price, who was born in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner, Louisiana, kicked off his music career in the early 1950s with a series of R&B hits, including the chart-topping “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” in 1952.
