A new diversity pilot program by Cyber.org is designed to encourage high-school students to study cybersecurity at historically black colleges and universities.
Infosec workforce and economic development organization Cyber.org this week officially announced the launch of a new diversity-minded pilot program designed to expose K-12 students to cybersecurity as a career option and connect them with historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that offer cyber degrees.
This âtalent feeder programâ has named Caddo Parish Public Schools in northwestern Louisiana as its first participating education district. The grant will enable two of the districtâs schools, Huntington High School and Southwood High School, to stand up computer lab environments and bring in a veteran cyber educator to train the faculty on how to teach the curriculum to their pupils. About a year ago, I began what was to be a three-part series on how the unfairness of Caddo Middle Magnet’s (CMM) sibling policy results in white kids with lower scores getting admitted to magnet schools over Black and white kids with higher scores.
Part 1 addressed how CMM was created for the express purpose of integrating and enhancing the quality of education for local students while redressing Caddo Parish’s racist Jim Crow era school policies. Part 2 demonstrated how that mission has been abandoned as evidenced by CMM now largely educating white students, even though the school district is roughly 70% Black.
