Eid l Fitr observance: Looking beyond the pandemic – Manila Bulletin

Published May 13, 2021, 12:36 AM Today, May 13, is a regular holiday as declared by President Duterte in Proclamation No. 1142,  “in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.” Eid’l Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking Fast, is celebrated by the Muslim world for three days after the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. In past years, the President customarily hosted a dinner celebration in Malacañang Palace to mark Eid’l Fitr but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this practice had to be shelved this year. As the nation marks the Eid’l Fitr observance, there is need to foster greater awareness of the situation of Muslim Filipinos.

Online petition launched: Stop child marriage in PH

Multi-sector groups have joined forces to press for the abolition of child marriage in the Philippines. They launched on Tuesday, May 11, an online petition on Change.Org and can be accessed via www.change.org/endchildmarriageph. The petition was spearheaded by the Child Rights Network (CRN), the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD), Plan International Philippines, and the nationwide coalition #GirlDefenders Alliance. The groups called on Congress to pass a law that will repeal all laws, decrees, executive orders, issuances, rules, and regulations that legally allow the practice of child marriage. So far, over 100 organizations, government agencies and officials, legislators, lawyers, health practitioners, personalities, and civil society advocates have already signed the petition. Free digital skills training is being offered to 25,000 Filipinos by The Asia Foundation, Pailig Development Foundation, Clevergrit Web Services, and Yoveo Digital, with the support of Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, to allow micro, small and medium business (MSME) owners to participate in the digital economy and overcome the economic impacts brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

DICT installs free Wi-Fi sites in 2 Lanao del Norte towns

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) (MANILA BULLETIN) The DICT, through its Mindanao Cluster 2 (MC2), rolled out free Internet hotspots in various locations in the towns of Bacolod and Maigo, Lanao del Norte. Free Internet access points were installed at Bacolod Central Elementary School, Bacolod Municipal Hall, Bacolod Municipal Plaza, Bacolod Municipal Police Station and Bacolod Rural Health Unit. Moreover, the DICT deployed free Wi-Fi access points at Maigo Town Hall, Maigo Municipal Plaza, Maigo Rural Health Unit, and Mindanao State University – Maigo School of Arts and Trades. “Your DICT continues to ramp up its deployment of Free Wi-Fi sites in various localities this year, thanks to the relentless efforts of our regional clusters and the continued support of local government units across the country,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said in a statement.
