I was at Pappas Seafood on the Gulf Freeway, eating lunch with Jim Henley, when I said something I’ll always regret.
Some in the Houston community will recall Jim as one of the Democrats who tried and failed to unseat Republican congressman John Culberson, before Lizzie Fletcher finally succeeded in 2018. At different times, he was also a Baptist preacher, a community organizer, a coffee farmer, and an elected trustee of the Harris County Board of Education. In between, he spent 20 years teaching at Lanier Middle School, first as a history teacher and then as the speech and debate coach.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA In recent weeks, workers have been demolishing the vacant Travelodge on Fairfax Boulevard to make way for a new Wawa gas station. A stone wall separates the property from the sidewalk that runs along the road. At one point, the wall dips toward the demolished building and forms an alcove that sits empty except for a collection of leaves and debris.
The Fairfax Pyramid choral singers performed their virtual winter concert Dec. 10, but it may still be viewed on YouTube for several months at https://youtu.be/sgQzLmA1YDw. The 35-minute concert features singers from the Fairfax Pyramid elementary schools and Lanier Middle School.
Conducting them is Fairfax High Choral Director Juliana Woodill, and the concert is intended to bring joy to everyone during this unique, yet festive, season. It features favorite holiday songs, plus students dressed in creative winter outfits perfect for the season.
The 60 elementary-school singers will perform a special, holiday-song mashup of “Hot Chocolate,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Suzy Snowflake.” And the concert will culminate with a massive collaboration of 250 singers in fourth through 12th grades. In addition, some archive videos will be presented so the audience may enjoy favorite performances from past pyramid concerts.
