Calls for dedicated hospice facility in the Latrobe Valley

Zac Standish MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe is leading the call for a dedicated hospice care facility to be set up in the Latrobe Valley. An idea that would utilise the vacant Hazelwood House precinct in Churchill, which closed in 2019, Mr Northe wrote to Health Minister Martin Foley about this proposition in May. It follows a motion moved by the Latrobe City Council in 2019 asking the state government to work with them in finding a suitable location for hospice care in the region. Mr Northe said the Hazelwood House site serves as an “ideal and unique” opportunity for the state government to deliver a much needed hospice care facility to the Latrobe Valley.

By TOM GANNON THE Moe Community Groups Hub is preparing to be dismantled to make way for new tenants, but groups that call the venue home are fearful they won’t have a place to go. Gippsland Employment Skills Training (GEST) has already moved to a new site in Morwell and the end of the road appears to be fast approaching for the smaller community groups currently operating out of the building. The Express understands the Department of Education will be moving into former Moe Library building on Kirk Street. The Mid Gippsland Family History Society, who have been in existence for 40 years with 27 of those spent at building, are becoming increasingly worried about their options when they are officially told to vacate.

Date Time Council seeks to establish Latrobe City Transition Taskforce Latrobe City Council is acting now to minimise the significant effects of the closure of power stations upon the municipality in the future. Council is seeking to establish the Latrobe City Transition Taskforce to advocate for bi-partisan support from all levels of government for Latrobe City, and to prepare the municipality for the economic and social impacts of the closures. The Taskforce has been deemed a major piece of work for Council for the next 10 years. Energy Australia has confirmed its Yallourn Power Station will close in 2028, and it is anticipated the Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B power stations will shut in the following decades.
