Pianists experiment with genres at jazz festival China Daily | Updated: 2021-07-20 08:50 Share CLOSE At the 55th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation teamed up with the New York-based Lang Lang International Music Foundation to shine a light on the need to build bridges using the universal language of music. Under the theme jazz meets classic , Switzerland-based Italian Nigerian singer and pianist Afra Kane, alongside Italian American pianist Valentina Kaufman, experimented with different genres in a sold-out concert on July 12. Due to the festival s reduced format this year and the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, only 150 music lovers were allowed into the Petit Theater Fairmont Le Montreux Palace.

Student Promotes Virtual Role Model Conference

Sarah Suresh, a 10th grader at Granada High School in Livermore, is serving as an ambassador for the Inspiring Role Models Virtual Conference, designed to encourage youth to follow their passions and promote interest in careers involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The conference, organized by the Michigan Youth Empowerment Foundation, will be Aug. 7-8. As a volunteer ambassador, Suresh’s role is to encourage local youths to sign up for the free conference, which will include presentations from business, government, and academic leaders. Scheduled speakers include Khalil “Army” Armstead, founder of Regime Music Group; Danielle Boyer, founder of the Steam Connection; Naomi Porter, CEO of Spice It Up and Bright Futures; Dilara Sumbul, author and editor at Dear Asian Youth; Eden Full Goh, founder of Mobot and SunSaluter; and Shuheng Zhang, a Lang Lang International Music Foundation scholar.

Lee University International Piano Festival winners announced

Posted 6/9/21   Nhi Luong and Hans Chan were named the winners of the 16th Lee University International Piano Festival and Competition, coming in first and second place, respectively. Their prizes were among six monetary awards distributed to Festival winners, concluding the virtual competition held May 27 through 31.  “The standard of the competition was extremely high and the adjudicators had a difficult time selecting the winners at the end,” said Dr. Jonathan Jung, Festival director and music professor at Lee. “We are tremendously grateful to see so many talented young pianists joining the Piano Festival this year and look forward to hosting our future events in person.”
