Nigerians, yesterday, expressed sorrow and paid glowing tributes as Lateef Jakande, the first civilian governor of Lagos State, died at the age of 91. x
His remains, according to his family, will be buried today.
His third son, Seyi, said he died in his sleep on Thursday, around 11 a.m., in his Ilupeju home.
Committee of Friends of the late ex-governor also confirmed the passing in a statement, which released details of the burial plan.
The statement was signed by Prof. Abisogun Leigh, former vice-chancellor LASU; Mr. Kamal Giwa; Prince Bayo Oshiyemi, Alhaji Gani Owolabi Dada; Mrs. Omolara Abeke Vaugh; and Alhaja Latifat Olufunke Gbajabiamila.

The Pan Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, the Afenifere, has mourned the former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, who died yesterday at the age of 91 as a leader who served the Centre of Excellence from 1979 to 1983 without greed.
The Afenifere, in a tribute entitled “Adieu Our LKJ” that was signed yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, described Jakande as the last of the LOOBO governors who faithfully implemented the Unity Party of Nigeria’s (UPN) five cardinal programmes in the second republic.
The socio-cultural organisation noted that Jakande’s implementation of the free education program, especially the phasing out of the shift program in Lagos schools, was swift and revolutionary.
Lagos journalists to rename NUJ Lighthouse after Jakande

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has said that it would rename the NUJ Lighthouse in Victoria Island after late Alhaji Lateef Jakande who died on Thursday at his Ilupeju residence in Lagos.
The Chairman, NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during his condolence visit to the family home of the late elder statesman.
NAN reports that Jakande was the first civilian Governor of Lagos State and a former Minister for Works and Housing.
Ajayi said that Jakande built the NUJ Lighthouse which would henceforth be renamed Lateef Jakande House in recognition of his contribution to the development of journalism profession in Nigeria.

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says the duty rate on cars and other vehicles will soon be reduced.
Kathleen Ekekezie, Assistant Comptroller-General, Zonal Coordinator, Zone `A’ Headquarters, NCS, made the disclosure while receiving the executive members of the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in her office in Lagos on Wednesday.
She said that the zone was waiting for the Federal Ministry of Finance to issue a circular for Customs to implement.
She noted that the service was now fully automated, saying that importers could no longer come with doctored Bill of Lading.
