mreuther@sungazette.com Local leaders are not keen about using highway tolls to fund bridge repairs, a concept that has already met with strong opposition from a handful of Republican lawmakers in the western part of the state. Nine bridges along Interstate 80 in the state are being considered for tolling as part of the plan by the state Department of Transportation. None of the bridges are in the region. Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce President Jason Fink said tolls on any part of I-80 are not a concept the business community is likely to embrace. He recalled the outcry from many officials from industry and business speaking out against tolling of I-80 when it was being considered years ago.

The eventual purchase of the plant by GreatStar Tools USA brought hope, but the situation has become even brighter with the news that at least 100 employees are now being rehired to work there. “This month, they are looking to hire back 55 people,” Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce President Jason Fink said. “They are anticipating 50 next month.” The company seems to be making good on its promise when it took ownership of Shop Vac assets to rehire employees who lost their jobs when the factory let go most of its 430-plus work force in the fall.
