Barnacle Historic State Park 3485 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove 305-442-6866 Only steps from CocoWalk and the bustling restaurants and shops of Coconut Grove’s entertainment district, Barnacle Historic State Park is the location of the oldest home still in its original location to be built in Miami-Dade. It also happens to be one of the more secluded, quieter parks to discover on one’s own, as the winding, canopied entryway leads to a grassy lawn with a head-on view of Biscayne Bay. Built by Ralph Middleton Munroe, a 20th-century settler of the area who fought off developers seeking to build artificial islands offshore and engineers who wished to pipe raw sewage into the bay, the passion project of a man who loved yachts and boats and, most of all, his Grove home, continues to be enjoyed by visitors today.

Miami Beach, a slender, nine-mile-long barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean, is divided into three distinct neighborhoods. South Beach – from South Pointe Park north to 23rd Street – is the most famous of the trio, home to sandy strands, swaying palms, and the pastel-colored Art Deco buildings that have become synonymous with this iconic destination and render it so undeniably photogenic.
If you’re not staying in South Beach, the Venetian Causeway and the MacArthur Causeway are scenic routes connecting to the mainland, offering stunning views of palatial waterfront homes. Already in South Beach? Slip-on your sneakers or rent a CitiBike and join locals at sunrise or sunset for a run or ride on the waterfront path.

Crandon Park 6747 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne 305-361-5421 Crandon Park Beach boasts some of the clearest waters Miami has to offer, thanks in part to a strict ban on floatation devices and its offshore sandbar itself an idyllic place to bask like the Floridian lizard you are at heart. Not to worry though, there’s plenty else to keep the whole family entertained, including unique eco-adventure experiences, picnic and cookout areas, and concession stands. If the sun becomes too much, head to the Family Amusement Center open on weekends and holidays only to check out its restored carousel, beachfront playground, and splash fountain.
