Lampasas County deputies arrest man wanted for sex offense; assist in high-speed pursuit

Deputies with the Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office were busy Sunday, arresting a man wanted out of Bexar County and later, assisting in a high-speed pursuit out of Williamson County, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Around 6:55 p.m. Sunday, deputies were called to the 800 block of Private Road 1236, about 10 miles west of Lampasas, for a tip that a 50-year-old man wanted out of Bexar County was hiding at a rural property. The caller told deputies that the man was wanted for a sex offense. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Mark Mason was wanted for aggravated sexual assault of a child, a second degree felony. He had a “recommended bond” of $150,000, the release said.

Rain and cooler temperatures possible for much of the week

Sunny skies and warm weather may soon give way to rain and cooler temperatures in the low- to mid-70s, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. A cold front is expected to bring with it scattered showers and thunderstorms for much of the week, beginning Monday evening, meteorologist Matt Stalley said Saturday. “Really, the second half of the week looks like it could be a chance of actually beneficial rainfall around that we really kind of need now that we’re slipping into drought conditions,” Stalley said. Much of Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties have been under varying levels of severity of drought for the past several weeks.

61 more COVID cases in Coryell County; first update in almost 2 weeks

For the first time since March 29, Coryell County has updated its coronavirus numbers, and the number shows an increase of 61 total cases. The new cases bring the county s total to 5,097 with 53 deaths. Of the cases, 85 are active and 4,959 have recovered. June Huckabee, the executive assistant to County Judge Roger Miller told the Herald Friday that the reason for the long period of time between updates is because the county is constantly scrubbing the lists that are coming from the state. Huckabee said the state has several deaths attributed to the county that the county cannot verify. In Lampasas County, an additional case was added to the count on Thursday evening.

Killeen-Fort Hood temperature could hit 95 today

Due to dry, breezy and warm conditions in the Killeen-Fort Hood area, especially west of Interstate 35, the National Weather Service said the chances of grass fires is “elevated.” Temperatures are forecast to reach 95 degrees today with sustained winds up to around 15 mph and gusts as high as around 25 mph. Much of Bell County is experiencing moderate drought conditions, with a portion of northern Bell County in severe drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, released Tuesday. In Coryell County, the northern, western, southern and southeastern edges are in severe drought conditions, while a large portion of the central part of the county is experiencing extreme drought conditions.

Lampasas COVID cases increase by 4

The total represents an increase of eight cases from the county s last update on Thursday. Of the total, 18 are active. One person is hospitalized, and since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 30 have died. Coryell County has not updated its numbers since Monday. In its last update, it reported a total of 5,036 cases and 53 deaths. Of the total cases, 84 were active.
