Starting in the spring of 2022, there will be CIF championships for girls beach volleyball.
The CIF Federated Council last week gave unanimous approval to the sport, which also is an official NCAA sport for women.
Portia Sherman of Dos Pueblos High, who is considered one of the top junior beach volleyball players in the state, is thrilled the sport is finally being recognized by the CIF.
“I am excited about the CIF’s decision to embrace beach volleyball as an official sport,” she said. “Beach volleyball has been a NCAA sport since 2015, and it makes sense for the CIF to align themselves in order to develop potential future college athletes.

Jordon Dyer, a former SBCC and Dos Pueblos High volleyball player, has been named the men s volleyball coach at SBCC.
Dyer takes the reins from Jon Newton, who coached the last four years and had one of the best teams in Vaquero history in 2019 before the season was cancelled by the coronavirus. The Vaqueros finished 8-2, winning their last eight matches and ranked No. 4 in the state. Jon Newton did an absolutely tremendous job building our program up to become one of the best in the state, both academically and athletically and I believe Jordon can maintain that, said SBCC Athletic Director Constantino. Jordon faces a really difficult situation with all of the uncertainty surrounding the season, but I think he’ll do a great job leading the program through this transition.
