Here s How Moving That 139-Year-Old Victorian House to 635 Fulton Street Looked Today
Unless you ve been living under a rock or practicing a digital detox odds are you ve heard about the Victorian house slated to be picked up and moved this weekend in San Francisco. Well, it has, in fact, now been relocated to its new foundation. And the pictures and videos of its journey are wild.
Back in the 70s, Victorian homes were hoisted atop wheeled trailers and moved from the Western Addition to the Fillmore District after a redevelopment plan of the former neighborhood displaced thousands of Black residents. (This forced neighborhood exodus saw some 2,500 other Victorians in the neighborhood demolished in what s still considered one of San Francisco s most egregious acts of outright gentrification.)

For the first time in more than 45 years, a Victorian home was relocated in San Francisco Sunday.
The 1880 Italianate-style house, once located at 807 Franklin, crawled seven blocks to 635 Fulton on a hydraulic dolly operated by remote control.

The morning had an almost celebratory feel, with onlookers cheering as the house moved inch by inch. Known as the Englander House, it began traveling south down Franklin Street to Golden Gate Ave around 7:20 a.m. It turned right to travel west to Laguna Street, making its final turn onto Fulton where it will be nestled next to an old mortuary.

Folks across San Francisco were jolted awake Saturday night, as their phones blared an Amber Alert message about two children abducted in Pacific Heights. According to a police spokesperson, a food delivery driver’s vehicle was stolen as he dropped off an order, the suspect taking off with the driver’s two kids inside. Immediately, crime discussion platforms like Nextdoor and Citizen were abuzz, with users wondering what the gig worker’s kids were doing in the van in the first place. But according to the delivery driver, he had no choice: His job with San Francisco-based Doordash is his sole source of income, and he doesn’t make enough to afford child care.
