Response to A Republican Speaks for Left of Center - Laguna Beach Local News

Laguna Beach Local News It’s a shame that Jean Ardell cannot write her own column, especially since her husband Dan is the only one to take her place. As to Ardell’s defense of his change to a left-wing Democrat, I can only feel sorrow for his choice. Using his own words, let’s change them to his new leaders:  The Democrats have become the cult of Joe Biden. They stand for, among many other things: illegal immigration, unequal application of the law (just think Hunter Biden, Clapper and Brennan), high inflation, depletion of our energy sources, denigration of our history and its destruction, application of Critical Race Theory to our schools (soon to be applied to the Laguna Beach Unified School District), continual lies and denials in the American press (think Russian collusion), and so the list goes on and on.

Laguna Beach USD school bus yard eyed for potential housing site

Laguna Beach Local News By Breeana Greenberg, Special to the Independent The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education and City Council discussed adding the school bus yard as a possible site for new housing at a joint meeting on July 15. “As everyone’s aware here, we’re very landlocked here in Laguna Beach,” Assistant Superintendent Jeff Dixon said. “So finding additional land to develop more units is fairly difficult. But they were very creative in their analysis of the city. And what they came up with was potential sites to add affordable housing.” Laguna’s Housing and Human Services Committee has looked at school district-owned properties, such as the bus yard and district office parking lot as potential housing sites.

Educating kids about e-bike safety a joint effort of Laguna Beach city, school and police officials

Print The Laguna Beach City Council and the Laguna Beach Unified School District held a joint meeting Thursday, and among the topics discussed was the emerging popularity of e-bikes in town. The mutual point of interest came up as interim Laguna Beach Police Chief Jeff Calvert gave a report on the activity of school resource officers, noting that e-bike education and safety was discussed in a community forum with parents in May. Calvert said that about 40 parents attended the forum, and he said e-bike safety will again be covered when the police department offers its next road safety expo. “We’ve seen [e-bike riders] going too fast, the wrong way [and without] helmets,” Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen said. “It really is concerning to all of us.”

Laguna Beach Local News By Breeana Greenberg, Special to the Independent Laguna Beach Unified School District Supt. Jason Viloria will earn a $322,149 annual base salary under a four-year contract approved by the Board of Education on a 4-1 vote June 24. Effective Thursday, Viloria out-earns his counterpart in Newport-Mesa Unified School District, Supt. Russell Lee-Sung, who earns $298,000, according to his employment agreement. Newport-Mesa Unified is made up of 32 schools with about 19,000 enrolled students while Laguna Beach Unified consists of just four schools with less than 2,700 enrolled students.  Board member Dee Perry opposed Viloria’s amended contract. Over the last year, Viloria and school board members faced consistent scrutiny by a group of parents upset over distancing learning, including a November 2020 decision to keep middle and high school students at home even as surrounding school districts welcomed students back to campuses.
