A couple of weeks ago, a snowy owl in the care of Atlantic Veterinary College staff was released back into the wild after recovering from severe emaciation.
It was an event Dave McRuer says is uncommon usually, by the time snowy owls are found in this condition, he said it is too late to save them.
McRuer is a wildlife health specialist with Parks Canada based at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown. His job takes him to national parks across Canada, where he has periodically come in contact with snowy owls. He was also director of wildlife services for 11 years at the Wildlife Centre of Virginia, where they would occasionally receive snowy owls, and worked with them as intern at the University of Saskatchewan.

NEWTOWN, PA A Virginia man was charged with robbery of a motor vehicle after he stole a fully loaded, tri-axle dump truck and hopped on Interstate 95, according to the Newtown Township Police Department.
At around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, a man walked out of the BB&T Bank on Newtown Yardley Road and approached several vehicles that were stopped at a red light on the Newtown Bypass, according to police.
The man tried to open the driver s side door of one of the vehicles, but the female driver was able to accelerate through the intersection. He then tried breaking into other vehicles, prompting a dump truck driver who was nearby to pull over to call 911 and confront the man. An altercation ensued, and the man stole the fully loaded dump truck and drove off toward Interstate

A 24-year-old Virginia man lead a wild police pursuit in a dump truck he stole moments after trying to force a woman out of her car while stopped at a red light in Bucks County, authorities said Wednesday.
Newtown Township and Lower Makefield police officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle theft on Jan. 5, around 10:50 p.m, at the intersection of the Newtown Bypass and Lindenhurst Road, authorities said.
The suspect was later identified as Joseph Anthony Gonzalez, police said.
Gonzalez, originally from Ruckersville, Virginia, had caused a disturbance in a nearby BB&T Bank before walking over to the intersection of the Newtown Bypass and tried to forcibly remove a woman from her vehicle while she was stopped at a red light, authorities said.
