Washington State has a variety of popular places to visit for wine, Woodinville and Walla Walla among the most well-known. Arguably some of the best grapes in Washington come from the Red Mountain AVA and winemakers are willing to pay the price three times the state average to get their hands on this stellar fruit.
A serendipitous blending of heat, low rainfall, cooler nights, and a sand, silt, and loam soil create an ideal location for growing vinifera grapes. Grown mainly on the southwest slope of Red Mountain, the main varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The tasting rooms on Red Mountain are located off the beaten path in a rural area. It takes a bit more effort to visit but it is so worth it to taste the renowned wines.

There are times that I think back to my early years and simply marvel at the simplicity of some tasks. Life was less complex, though we were still held to a higher standard. There was pride in workmanship, morals, ethics and many other factors at play, but there was indeed a time when life was simple.
When my family arrived in Concord during the year 1850, they had journeyed for many months. They were unfortunate victims of the potato famine in Ireland where they worked as tenant farmers. They would lease the fields in Ireland to plant a fresh crop of potatoes, borrowing money to pay for seed and promising the landowner a healthy financial return when the crops were harvested at the end of the growing season. Spring is here and hope beckons. Maybe soon, maybe even now, we can begin to chip our way out of the shells we’ve been in since the beginning of the pandemic. Was it just a year ago? Seems like a generation, but all that time spent in our bubbles will just make it that much sweeter when we re-encounter and re-embrace the wondrous attractions of the Granite State.

Peter Lancaster has always had a love for rabbits. But when he first saw a pygmy rabbit – perhaps what would become the most influential animal throughout his life – he didn’t know what it was.
One spring break as a kid, Lancaster went camping with a few friends a little ways from his home in East Wenatchee.
Out in the sage, they saw this little creature.
“We looked at it, and we all said … Pika?” Lancaster recalls.
But 12-year-old Lancaster decided they hadn’t quite identified the cute animal with rounded ears. It hopped off into a burrow.
