More Migrant Kids Are In Federal Care Than Ever Many Will Head To Houston

Lynda M. González for KUT A pair of socks hang to dry inside a makeshift Border Patrol holding area for migrants in El Paso, back in 2019. More unaccompanied migrant minors came into government care in March than any other month in the history of the Office of Refugee Resettlement program, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. And hundreds of those kids many of whom are fleeing violence in their home countries will end up with family in Houston, according to experts. Federal officials have been overwhelmed by large numbers of Central American kids and teens arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border each day. Some 23,000 are currently in federal custody 2,700 in Customs and Border Protection custody and 20,500 under the care of Health and Human Services.

At South Loop bus station, volunteers see signs of increased immigration

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times Armed with snacks and toiletries, Colin McCormick and Amanda Treviño scanned the bustling bus terminal in the South Loop on a recent morning and spotted a mother carrying an infant and trailed by three small boys. McCormick and Treviño, part of the Chicago Immigrant Transit Assistance, approached her and confirmed the family had been recently released from immigration detention near the southern border. One of the small boys who had been crying started to giggle as McCormick showed him a stuffed dog while Treviño arranged for a ride to take the family to the northwest suburbs.

The New Humanitarian | Tackling the root causes of the migration crisis in Central America

GENEVA In March, a record number of children travelling alone entered the United States from Mexico irregularly, and the US federal agency tasked with preventing irregular migration carried out the most apprehensions at the country’s southern border in a single month for 15 years.  But far from being the main crisis in the region, the sharp uptick in numbers is a byproduct of humanitarian emergencies playing out in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador – collectively known as the Northern Triangle of Central America – where choosing to stay or leave is often a question of life and death, according to experts. The COVID-19 pandemic’s exacerbation of pre-existing issues – including pervasive crime, high murder rates, government corruption, the effects of climate change, and economic hardship – has only increased the need for many in the region to migrate.
