State Rep reaches 100% kill rate on Legislation for 2021

This latest measure, a resolution, was actually the only measure that made it past the house floor.. only to be killed quickly in a Senate Committee. So if you think you’re having a bad day.. it might not be as bad as the 100% bad day some are having. Share this:

SDSU one step closer to $20 million in state funds for new lab

South Dakota State University is one step closer to getting $20 million in state funds after receiving the green light from senators on the Senate Committee on Appropriations on Wednesday morning. House Bill 1210 will now move to the Senate floor, with seven senators who voted in favor and one excused. If approved, the funds would contribute to a proposed $28.5 million bioproducts laboratory at SDSU s research park, where students and private researchers would develop new ways to use natural South Dakota products, such as corn and soybeans, as bioproducts. Funding for the bioprocessing facility is not included in Gov. Kristi Noem s proposed state budget, according to a statement from the Bureau of Finance and Management. However, the legislative budget process involves adopting revenue estimates and reviewing existing and proposed expenses from Noem.

Legislation redefining agricultural land heads to Gov Noem s desk after Senate approval

Legislation redefining agricultural land heads to Gov. Noem s desk after Senate approval Legislation that would change the definition of agricultural land for tax purposes will head to Gov. Kristi Noem s desk for signing, but not without reservations from some senators. House Bill 1085 changes the tax code so that land could be classified as agricultural  and receive any ensuing tax breaks if its principal use is agricultural. Additionally, in three of the past five years, the landowner must have received an annual gross income of at least $2,500 from the pursuit of agriculture. Under current statute, land is agricultural if the gross income derived from agriculture is at least 10% of the taxable valuation of the bare land assessed as agricultural property.

Should South Dakota s governor and attorney general get a raise?

PIERRE Raises could be on the way for South Dakota s governor and attorney general, among other constitutional office holders. Lawmakers are advancing legislation that would override the annual cost of living adjustment that Gov. Kristi Noem, Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg and the commissioner of Schools and Public Lands have enjoyed since each took office. Instead, it would bring their salaries more in line with what backers of the plan say is the norm for similar offices and job duties in other states and the private sector. But some say the timing and optics of giving raises to public officials is poor, given the controversy swirling around the attorney general s office and the criticism the governor faces for her recent campaign travel, which she s parlayed into a seven-figure campaign war chest.
