Florida s congressional delegation Thursday urged President Biden to include $725 million for Everglades restoration in his upcoming budget request, a commonsense ask to help complete a number of water projects in the thirsty ecosystem.
The federal funding would build upon a record-high $250 million in Everglades restoration, made official Dec. 27 in the final approval of the biennial Water Resources Development Act, which prioritizes water projects across the country. Now it’s time to build on that momentum with an even larger commitment,” U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Palm City, said in a prepared statement Thursday. “Now is the time to put the pedal to the metal to stop discharges and send the water south once and for all.
For decades, federal gun safety legislation spurred by mass shootings has come and vanished in Washington despite pleas from victims, their families and poll after poll showing most Americans support some form of gun control.
Failures have been blamed on the National Rifle Association, fervent Second Amendment activists and opportunistic politicians fearful of offending the powerful gun lobbies and their gun-owning constituents.
Now, with a president in office who once succeeded in banning assault weapons, Democrats holding gavels in Congress, the NRA in financial shambles and the U.S. House disciplining a member who once claimed school shootings could be hoaxes, the political climate in Washington appears to be warming to doing more than talking about gun safety.

Florida’s state budget has a $2 billion shortfall? So, stop spending millions of dollars for the “three toll roads to nowhere”!
The federal government has already given the state $5.8 billion in COVID-19 relief. How much Affordable Care Act (ACA) money would they give us to expand Medicaid? Floridians pay federal taxes that are being handed out to other states, as Florida hospitals struggle and bill all of us for emergency room care for Floridians without health insurance. I wonder how many high-tech medical jobs could be created with ACA money?
Florida Republicans have long handed out lots of tax dollars to agencies like Enterprise Florida, Space Florida and Visit Florida to create jobs. Using ACA money to expand Medicaid could also do that, and create more productive, tax-paying citizens.
