Food and organics waste to be composted in new service
The City of Melbourne is introducing a new food and organics collection service to help local residents reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
As part of the service, residents living in houses and single-storey apartment blocks will be provided with:
A new lime-green wheelie bin for food and organic waste (120 litre)
a kitchen caddy for collecting food scraps, and
a roll of 52 compostable bin liners to help keep their new bin free of odours, which will be supplied for free on an ongoing basis.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said more than 9000 homes will receive the initial service before the rollout continues more widely across the municipality in 2022.

On March 19, 2020, when the Morrison government said it would shut Australiaâs international borders, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg was grilled on how long the gates would stay closed. Six months or more, the Treasurer said, although he stressed it would depend on medical advice and the borders wouldnât open âuntil it is safe to do soâ.
On Tuesday, Frydenberg delivered a budget which assumes the border will stay more or less shut until the middle of next year, which would be 27 months. He was speaking at a time when Australia had done something almost unthinkable â stopping even its own citizens from coming home from India with the threat of jail.

The factory on Vegemite Way in Port Melbourne was among three sites recommended for local protection, while two other sites could be added to the state register if councillors support the recommendations at a meeting on Tuesday.
Deputy lord mayor Nicholas Reece said the West Gate Bridge, which opened in 1978, had historic, social and technical state significance.

Marcel Mihulka and his family chose to live near Shell House â the skyscraper on the corner of Flinders and Spring streets â in part because of the heritage listing stopping redevelopment of one of Melbourneâs most decorated pieces of architecture.
But the heritage listing for the skyscraper, designed by world-renowned architect Harry Seidler, will be set aside if an application before authorities is successful.

The towerâs owners, the Besen and Roth families, want to dig up its rear plaza in Flinders Lane and build a 33-storey tower, standing alone from Shell House but linked via a sky bridge at the 15th level.
