Sadiq Khan has allowed councillors’ decisions on plans for the Homebase site in North Finchley and the Whalebones estate in High Barnet to stand. When sufficiently large housing schemes have passed through council planning committees, they are then referred to the mayor – who can overturn the committee’s decision.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman warned against putting solar farms on parks A councillor has called for all of Barnet’s parks and green spaces to be protected amid fears some could be used as sites for solar farms. Labour’s environment spokesman Cllr Alan Schneiderman warned against proposals he claimed would restrict access to parks and green spaces deemed low-value and low-quality by the council. A total of 45 of the borough’s open spaces have been put into this category – and a savings proposal drawn up by the council revealed some could be used for solar farms.

Councillors refused Taylor Wimpey’s plan to build 307 homes at the site of the Homebase store at 679 High Road, North Finchley, at a meeting of the strategic planning committee on Wednesday. Officers at Barnet Council had recommended the scheme for approval, claiming it was in line with local policies and a development plan drawn up for the town centre.
