The stateâs top law enforcement agency has completed its investigation into the fatal shooting of Estavon Dominick Elioff in December in Mountain Iron by two sheriffâs deputies and started handing over findings to the St. Louis County Attorneyâs Office for review.
The turning over of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehensionâs findings was confirmed Wednesday morning. The investigation remains open during the review and the details are not made public per state law, said BCA spokeswoman Jill Oliveira.
Elioff, 19, a Hispanic and white man from Virginia, was fatally shot while allegedly fleeing from sheriffâs deputies Ryan Smith and Matt Tomsich, who are white, in the Mountain Iron woods last month.

DULUTH, Minn. – St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman says he’s confident his office is prepared to handle any potential violence against county government buildings, amid an FBI warming of “armed protests” at all 50 state capitols before, during or even after President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Litman told FOX 21’s Dan Hanger Wednesday that his deputies are on a “heightened sense of awareness,” especially concerning the county courthouses, which are mentioned as potential targets of violence across the country by the FBI.

Family and friends of a 19-year-old Virginia man fatally shot by St. Louis County authorities Dec. 5 are speaking out in search of answers.
The family of Estavon Elioff took part in a rally Monday in Mountain Iron, where roughly two dozen people challenged the prevailing silence since the shooting by two St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
Elioff’s first cousin, Maria Krulich, 20, of Virginia, attended the protest and told the News Tribune it was only the beginning.
