Gainesville police say man scammed elderly victims, had them mail cash

According to a Gainesville police arrest report, the three victims were all instructed to send their packages full of money to a Gainesville hotel, addressed to a man named “John William” or “John Wilian.”  The man staying in room 113 at the Extended Stay America at 3600 SW 42nd St. in Gainesville registered as John Wilian, was set to check out at 11:30 a.m. on April 22, but was delayed as he awaited delivery of a package, the front clerk told police, according to an arrest report. Confronted by an undercover officer in the hotel’s lobby who had watched him leave his room and head for the front desk, the man offered a false name, the arrest report said. During his arrest, Thomas was found to have a valid Florida license and a North Redington Beach address, the arrest report said.
