If someone were to ask us, “What is the opposite of good?” a natural response might be, “It is evil.” But is it really? Or always?
Or if someone were to ask us, “What is the opposite of love for your neighbor?” we might naturally reply, “Hatred.” But is it really?
As I have pondered these two questions of late, I returned to Jesus’ Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). It’s a story about a rich man who lived a life of luxury and a poor, sick beggar who lay at the rich man’s gate every day hoping for the scraps from the rich man’s table that were thrown out to the dogs.
