Haas F1 rookie Nikita Mazepin is hoping to complete his first Formula 1 competitive lap this weekend at Imola.
Mazepin, who is called Maze-Spin by some on social media, spun out again in practice on Friday.
The F1 Emilia Romagna GP is Sunday (8:55 a.m., ET, ESPN)
Haas F1 Team rookie Nikita Mazepin lived up to his not-so-flattering nickname during the first Formula 1 practice session at Imola, Italy, on Friday.
Pierre Gasly qualified a fine P4 for the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and the Frenchman was once again demonstrating his affinity with the Imola track on the Friday of the 2021 race weekend, ending Free Practice 2 in P3, and less than a tenth off Valtteri Bottas’ session-leading time – and drawing praise from a seven-time world champion in the process.
Gasly started his day well by going fifth fastest for AlphaTauri in FP1, at the Imola track that’s based just 15km from the team’s Faenza HQ. But once the qualifying simulations of FP2 had been run, Gasly was surprised to find himself in a stunning P3 and just 0.078s off Bottas’ time – albeit that the Finn had set his fastest lap on medium tyres compared the softs of Gasly, while Lewis Hamilton was only 0.068s faster than Gasly on the same tyre.

Imola make change to boost overtaking hopes

Imola’s sole DRS zone for the Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna Grand Prix has been extended.
The famous Italian circuit returned to the Formula 1 schedule in the autumn of 2020 as one of several races added to the calendar to flesh it out following a spate of cancellations caused by the health pandemic.
Five-and-a-half months on it is back again, this time as the specific replacement for the Chinese Grand Prix which has been postponed indefinitely for 2021 – although not officially cancelled completely as yet.
Since the last time Imola had staged F1 at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari for the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix, the Variante Bassa chicane had been removed, creating a full-throttle run from the exit of the second Rivazza left-hander through to Tamburello, with the only DRS zone placed along this stretch of the circuit.
