MARQUETTE Northern Michigan University’s Theatre and Dance department will present a modern twist on the literary classic “Romeo and Juliet” with a filmed production available for viewing Monday, May 10-Wednesday, June 30. This production of Shakespeare’s infamous tale of two star-crossed lovers will be the department’s first full-length film.
“The show is professionally filmed by the NMU Marketing and Communications video team on the Forest Roberts Theatre stage with several cameras, some static and some moving,” said Professor of Theater Paul Truckey, who is directing the production, in a press release. “The edited scenes are very exciting, especially the fights. I believe that audiences will really enjoy the film, which looks very much like a movie but still keeps the feel of live theater.”
Poor Juliet. If Romeo had only been named Romeo Brown or Romeo McGillicudy or anything but Romeo Montague, he could have married Juliet and lived happily ever after. Instead, well, you.

OPINION: The arrival of our first grandchild recently prompted a discussion of our reactions to names, as we wondered what his parents would call him. Juliet Capulet, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is overheard by Romeo Montague saying to herself “‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy […] What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” The Capulets and Montagues are locked in a feud, but Juliet affirms that she cannot stop loving Romeo simply because he has the name Montague. It doesn’t matter what you call a rose, it will still smell sweet.
