If the surf music from the 1960s had one defining sound, it would be the opening drum roll and familiar guitar melody from the Surfarisâ 1962 hit song âWipe Out.â
Known as the most important instrumental song of the decade and featured in films such as Dirty Dancing, âWipe Outâ was written and recorded on the spot in a little recording studio in Cucamonga by a group of high school students who had formed a band called The Surfaris.
The meteoric success of their first hit led the group of teenagers from Glendora to co-headline a tour with the Beach Boys and sign with prominent labels such as Dot and Decca. The group went on to have other hits including âSurfer Joeâ and âPoint Panic.â

USD 489 school board forms bond issue committees
Hays Daily News
Hays USD 489 has waited a credible amount of time since its last unsuccessful bond issue election in 2017 and should schedule another vote to ask the public to issue bonds to pay for needed improvements, Superintendent Ron Wilson said last week.
Some people will be critical of the process, regardless of how the district goes about doing it, Wilson told USD 489 board members at their May 17 meeting.
Still, he said, If every time the mailman heard the dog barking, he stopped in his tracks or changed direction, he d never get the mail delivered.
Killips said school board members will fill answer the following questions:
What are the skills, qualifications, characteristics and traits you want to see in the new superintendent?
What are the challenges in the next 3-5 years facing Ionia Public Schools?
What are the points of pride for Ionia?
Killips will collect answers and share them with the board members anonymously.
The same three questions will then be placed on the IPS website for teachers, staff, students and the community to complete anonymously, Killips said.
The survey runs May 19-23 and the answers will be provided to the school board.
Killips will meet with IPS staff in-person May 25 to ask the three questions. Killips will provide anonymous answers to the school board, who won’t be allowed to attend.
