Celebrating the Life of Clark Terry Share
December 14, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of Clark Terry’s birth! KUVO Jazz is celebrating the life and music of this trailblazing trumpeter, band leader, music producer and publisher, educator and NEA Jazz Master by playing tracks from Terry throughout the day.
Beginning at 2 pm on Monday, December 14, host Rodney Franks takes us on a deep dive into Terry’s life and impact, featuring interviews with Denver’s leading jazz trumpeters Bob Montgomery and Hugh Ragin. Franks also has remembrances and salutes from Greg Gisbert, Brad Goode, and Ron Miles.
“We’ve spoken with local players who knew and played or studied with Clark Terry, and Terry’s impact was profound,” said Franks. “Their memories were insightful. Their stories were priceless.”

The Purnell Steen Quintet is comprised of some of the top musicians of this region. Purnell, a Denver native, started classical piano studies at age 4, and switched to Jazz Piano more than 40 years ago, due in large part to the urging of his legendary cousin, Charlie Burrell.
Bassist Ron Bland is a First Call internationally known bassist, as are guitarists Ed Stephen and Vohn Regensburger,along with drummer Bill Larson. This quintet is committed to preserving Hard-Swing jazz that made 5 Points famous. They have performed with 5- Time Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves; Earth, Wind, and Fire, Bill Frizell, Ron Miles and countless other top notch artists. The swingin’ style of the immortal Oscar Peterson Quartet and King Cole Trio have greatly influenced this hot group.
