The Redbud City: It happened in April Clyde Wooldridge CITY ELECTION 125 YEARS AGO - The city-wide election on April 8, 1896, was a highly emotional contest between two competing political views. The local news media called it “a grand and glorious victory for the good people of Shawnee. It cannot be called a Republican victory for the fact that many good Democratic citizens voted for Mr. Search.” Charles Knox, the Democrat, was elected as city clerk by 102 votes over George Boggs, the Republican. From the First Ward, Dr. H.J. Keith and Oscar Lee were selected as aldermen; Robert Reed and L.C. Thompson won their posts in the Second Ward; in the Third Ward, Charles Linn and Eastes tied and would have to be selected by lot, won by Linn; and finally, in the Fourth Ward, George Overstreet and C.C. COVID-19 dominates year The Shawnee News-Star Reminiscing on the past 12 months, the most significant of events glaring back is clearly COVID-19 and how it has upended life as we know it. Whether it s been health scares, shutdowns or mask mandates, the pandemic has forced everyone to reimagine how to function safely from a distance. The year began as usual, with news of new business coming and a church marked its centennial. January (Pre-COVID-19) • A formal sentencing hearing took place for defendant Byron James Shepard, 38, of Okemah, convicted in the 2017 murder of Tecumseh Police Officer Justin Terney. On the felony count of murder in the first degree, the death sentence was issued to Shepard.

December 24th, 2020 |     There s just more than a month until the Legislature returns to session in 2021, and nearly every issue that plagued lawmakers in 2020 looks likely to be the same or worse. The partisan rifts are deeper. The state s budget situation is more dire. The COVID-19 pandemic is raging on, with grave impacts to both public health and Alaska s economy. And, as in the last Legislature, the challenge of organizing majority caucuses in the House and Senate looks daunting. On top of that, Gov. Mike Dunleavy s budget would set a scary, shortsighted precedent. Same as it ever was Although the Alaska GOP effectively split into two different parties in August s primary election, the overall effect this had on the number of seats the major parties held in the Legislature after the general election was surprisingly muted.
