Asphalt Will Be Used On Saline Creek Road, Not Chip & Seal

By Editor | May 12, 2021 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Saline Creek Road will be the next focus of the Ste. Genevieve County Commission, following completion of the Lawrenceton Cutoff/Roth Road project. Commissioners agreed with road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder’s suggestion that the 6/10 of a mile stretch will need regular asphalting. Because of a steep hill, often used by heavy trucks, chip and seal paving would probably not hold up long. “If we chip and seal it a month  later it will be peeling off,” Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson said. The commissioners asked Schmieder’s opinion. He said asphalt was definitely his recommendation.

Heavy Use Of Rock Causing Budget Issue

By Editor | April 28, 2021 y MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Although the Lawrenceton Cutoff Road project, with its Highway Y and Roth Road (an extension of Lawrenceton Cutoff) intersection improvement has caused the county to exceed its allocated budget for prep rock, the Ste. Genevieve  County Commission is not panicking. The intersection itself took some 12,000 tons of rock. “We never anticipated anything like that,” Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson said during last Thursday’s County Commission meeting. “We’re four months into the year and we’re already over budget on  prep rock.” He was quick to note, however, that “We’re not going to go broke.”

Masks No Longer Required To Enter County Courthouse

By Editor | April 21, 2021 By MARK EVANS Masks are no longer required to enter the Ste. Genevieve County Courthouse. The County Commission voted last Thursday to reascend the mandate from last fall that face masks had to be worn to enter the building. With some 27 percent of the county vaccinated and numbers of confirmed active cases down, the commission decided to relax the entry requirement. Visitors will still have to get their temperature taken and certain offices within the building require masks – including the circuit court and circuit court clerk’s office. “You don’t have to have one to enter the building or to walk down the hall,” First District Commissioner Karen Stuppy said.

Lawrenceton Cutoff Project Needs To Be Done

By Editor | April 14, 2021 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson stressed to road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder that the entire Lawrenceton Cutoff Road project needs to be started and completed before asphalt prices start rising. While he doesn’t expect problems getting the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) permit to do the intersection of Highway Y and Roth Road (which turns into Lawrenceton Cutoff Road), Nelson suggested having “a back-up plan.” That could include starting on the Highway C side of the bridge to pave. According to the MoDOT  Asphalt Price Indexing, the price of asphalt per liquid tonnage could jump by nearly 10 percent from April to May and another 25 percent from May to June.
