Print In a recent Rising Stars event at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, some 100 people gathered each night over two days outside in the center’s Lyric Court to hear 20 up and coming young artists who were selected out of 250 auditioning youths to perform in the ninth annual Rising Stars showcase. For many it was their first in-person performance in more than year because of the pandemic. It was especially meaningful for two teens who became friends seven years ago onstage and now as newly named Artists of the Year were doing a duet at the same venue where they had first performed together.

Whether it succeeds will depend partly on the cooperation of parents, who appear deeply divided on the issue. A WHYY review of survey data from November shows that families when given a choice between in-person learning and hybrid learning were fairly split on the topic. When looking at school-by-school breakdowns, few patterns emerged. Families attending schools in affluent areas were about as likely to choose in-person instruction as families attending schools in low-income neighborhoods. Similarly, survey response rates did not seem tied to school demographics.

Sir William Allen dies at 83 Sir William Allen. Sir William Allen, who served as governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas and later minister of finance, died at his New Providence home yesterday after a long illness. He was 83. Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, in expressing condolences to Sir William’s family, said his contribution to the development and advancement of The Bahamas is immeasurable. Ingraham noted that Allen returned home from the United States in 1970 to take up a post as research manager at the Central Bank. He went on to serve as deputy governor and ultimately as governor of the bank. He was appointed to that post on June 1, 1980 after the resignation of the late Timothy Baswell Donaldson from the post.

Student entrepreneurs in middle school, high school and university/community colleges were selected to pitch their creative concepts over Zoom and answer questions from judges. Three students from Susan Woods’ Financial Literacy class reached the finals, with junior Nicholas Rabjohn taking first place for his pitch of Team Forum. This intuitive app for youth and high school athletes would help players and coaches communicate, allow players to analyze game film and give athletes the opportunity to train efficiently in their off seasons. Senior Jenna Ferayorni finished fourth with her pitch for The Garden Doggy, an automatic vacuum for indoors or outside that would clean up any pet messes.
