PERRY TOWNSHIP Annabell Plaugher spent her final year of high school working as a nursing assistant in a Lima nursing home, balancing a busy schedule of college classes, athletics and volunteer activities with two part-time jobs, all while the coronavirus pandemic unfolded.
Through it all, the Perry High School senior has maintained a 3.5 grade-point average and a deeper appreciation for her future career as a nurse.
“I was always driven to that profession,” Plaugher said.
Plaugher was inspired to pursue nursing by her grandmother and her aunt, both nurses who were “strong, powerful” women in Plaugher’s life.
Choosing a campus without the tour
By David Trinko - dtrinko@limanews.com
Mark Koch, a guidance counselor at Wapakoneta High School, talks about the challenges students face trying to choose a college in the midst of a pandemic. “They surely get a better feel on a tour than from a virtual tour or just talking to someone by phone who’s a counselor at a university,” Koch said.

Madi Sams, a junior at Wapakoneta, said campus tours are irreplaceable. “You see what they post on social media,” she said. “That’s nothing like seeing it in person, what you’re actually going to see on campus or in the classes.”

LIMA Area educators on every level had to swiftly change plans when COVID-19 hit the region last March.
For Lima schools, the changes were profound.
“We had to do a lot of physical things to our buildings and in our buildings in terms of shields, being pretty meticulous with spacing as well, hand sanitizers, supplies and things like that,” said Jill Ackerman, superintendent of Lima schools.
