Den Anker restaurant offers free meals to UCT students affected by fire

Belgian restaurant Den Anker has used the power of social media to reach out to University of Cape Town residence students in need of food amid raging fires that destroyed parts of the university on Sunday.
In a Twitter post, the restaurant wrote they would be serving the students for a week but they needed to bring their residence card as proof.
“Any UCT res students who have been directly affected by the fire are welcome to come over to Den Anker this evening.
“We will serve you a plate of food, you will need to provide us with proof of your res card. #DenAnker #NewlandsFire #UCTStudents #Fire #CapeTownFire,” they wrote.

NATIONAL NEWS - At least four firefighters have been injured while battling a runaway veld fire in Cape Town that started on Sunday morning.
While the cause of the fire was still unclear, several structures including parts of the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant and a library at the University of Cape Town (UCT) have been destroyed, according to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management.

Fire ‘largely under control’
Cape Town fire and rescue operations manager Arlene Wehr said on Monday that the situation is largely under control, and the team will be monitoring the fires.
“We’re just monitoring the wind situation, the weather and if there is any changes we will call in additional resources.”
It has also been confirmed that four firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, while Cape Town mayor Dan Plato said it’s “too early to predict” the overall damaged caused by the fire.
“It’s too early to predict, it’s too early to say – likewise for the City of Cape Town, likewise for UCT. The investigating teams need to determine the extent of the damage”.

The blaze gutted a section of the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant and quickly spread to adjacent areas.
According to Jacaranda FM News, The University of Cape Town (UCT) has given assurance that measures are in place to assist students affected by the fire on the Rondebosch campus on Sunday. Historical artefacts and documents were also lost when flames engulfed the Jagger library.
