Orlando City Re-Signs Defender Robin Jansson to New Contract

Orlando City announced today that the club has re-signed veteran center back Robin Jansson to a new contract. Jansson had his option year picked up after the 2020 season but the Lions rewarded his solid play with a new two-year deal with two additional option years that could see the Beefy Swede remain in a purple kit through 2024. It could potentially be Jansson’s final professional contract, as he will turn 30 in mid-November and would turn 33 just after the 2024 season.

Merry Monday morning, Mane Landers! Well, that was quite a week, wasn’t it? I’m not going to go into any of it or my personal thoughts about it, but suffice to say, it was unprecedented and shocking.

Share this story is situated entering the MLS SuperDraft later this month and the 2021 season as a whole. We’ll look at each position group and determine the relative strength of the team as we look ahead to the upcoming season. Today we’ll take a look at the center backs.
Orlando City entered 2020 with some uncertainty at center back. The Lions had tried many players in central defense over the years with results that were mixed, but mostly poor. Some of the individual players were fine Jonathan Spector comes to mind but no tandem seemed cohesive and injuries and a lack of continuity at the position prevented any kind of chemistry from forming. As a result, individual center backs played inconsistently and the team played as though it was afraid of making a single mistake.

Orlando Citysigned Swedish defender Robin Jansson on March 12, 2019 and he became a steady starter in his first MLS season. It wasn’t a perfect first year in Orlando by any means, but Jansson did help improve the Lions defensively and grew more comfortable throughout the season a season ago.
In 2020, Jansson had to adjust to a new central defense partner, in front of a new goalkeeper, with none of the three players having the same primary language. But Jansson, Antonio Carlos, and Pedro Gallese formed a solid triangular alliance at the back for Orlando and continued the improvement defensively that the club started last year, cutting the goals-against per game from 1.53 in 2019 to just 1.09 this season. Only three teams in the Eastern Conference and five teams in all of MLS conceded fewer goals than Orlando City’s 25 in 2020.
