Appeals court rejects Rodney Reed's bid for DNA tests on murder weapon

A federal appeals court rejected death row inmate Rodney Reed s request for DNA testing, ruling Thursday evening that he waited too long to file a lawsuit arguing that prosecutors were violating his civil rights by refusing to test the murder weapon and other crime scene evidence. The federal lawsuit, filed in August 2019, was one of several last-ditch efforts from defense lawyers as Reed s Nov. 20, 2019 execution date approached. A different appeal, arguing that the Bastrop man did not commit the 1996 murder that sent him to death row, prompted the state s highest criminal court to halt his execution with five days to spare  launching a trial court investigation that is still ongoing.
