The Rhode Island Senate is set to vote on the nomination of Providence City Council President Sabina Matos for lieutenant governor Tuesday afternoon.
If confirmed, Matos would be the first woman of color to hold the position. She was born in the Dominican Republic and came to the United States in 1994.
The Senate convenes at 4 p.m. at Rhode Island College.
Matos is Gov. Dan McKee s hand-picked successor. McKee was elevated from lieutenant governor to governor in March, when Gov. Gina Raimondo resigned to become commerce secretary in the Biden administration.

PROVIDENCE, RI Rhode Island officially has a new second-in-command. Sabina Matos nomination was confirmed by the full Senate Tuesday evening.
Matos will be formally sworn in at a ceremony in the Rhode Island State House Wednesday morning. The building remains closed to the public due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Gov. Dan McKee thanked Senate lawmakers for their swift action in taking up Matos confirmation.
Subscribe Sabina understands the challenges facing Rhode Island families and she shares my commitment to supporting our municipalities and small businesses, McKee said. I look forward to having her as my governing partner as we work to get shots in arms as quickly as possible so we can get Rhode Islanders back to work, businesses back in business, and students back in the classroom safely.
4 New States May Legalize Cannabis In 2021
So far in 2021the cannabis industry as a whole has been able to grow at an exponential rate. This current growth has also played a part in the better days of trading of some of the top marijuana stocks. For example, when word started to circulate about better cannabis legislation in the U.S. some cannabis stocks started to perform better in the market. Right there is a big push for ending cannabis prohibition in the United States.
Making cannabis federally legal will open more doors for the industry in its entirety. Along with federal cannabis, reform comes more states that are looking to pass some form of state-level cannabis legislation. By more states going legal will only add more value to the U.S. cannabis industry as well as give a bit more of a push for Congress to legalize cannabis on a federal level.
