The Day - Offshore wind farm gets approval from coastal regulators - News from southeastern Connecticut

Email Submit PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island coastal regulators have given a proposed wind farm off the state s coast critical approval over the objections of the fishing industry and some environmentalists. The vote Wednesday by the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council in favor of the South Fork Wind Farm moves the project one step closer to reality. Fishermen objected, arguing that a compensation package agreed to with developers Orsted and Eversource will not adequately compensate them for the loss of fishing grounds, The Providence Journal reported. The environmental group Save The Bay said the 130-megawatt wind farm is being placed in the wrong spot in Rhode Island Sound, an area home to a rich diversity of fish.

So he s become: Mr. Everywhere.  If there is a legislative press conference, a photo op with a high-profile Rhode Island labor leader or a chance to tout his progressive credentials, Democrat Magaziner is there.   By his staff s count, he has this year alone testified remotely  or sent written testimony on 74 bills and budget proposals, ranging from the proposed plastic bag ban to Medicaid coverage for doulas to an assault weapons ban.

Offshore wind developers announce $24-million facility at ProvPort

PROVIDENCE  The owner of the first offshore wind farm in the nation is set to build an assembly facility at the Port of Providence to support the development of much bigger projects that would supply power to Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.  Orsted, the global leader in offshore wind development and operator of the five-turbine Block Island Wind Farm, joined on Wednesday with its partner Eversource to announce construction of the facility that will fabricate and assemble foundation platforms for what could amount to more than 100 wind turbines.   The platforms are critical components for the proposed wind farms. They would be mounted on foundations secured to the ocean floor and wind turbines would be installed on top of them.
