While a court clerk fought to the last ditch against press access, a box on the counter in Ventura’s state court stood as a symbol of access past and future.

LOS ANGELES (CN) On the counter in Ventura Superior Court sat the ghost of access past, a white, plastic press box.
It came from the days of old when new cases were filed in paper and the local press was strong. But in 2011, when Courthouse News first challenged the Ventura court clerk on First Amendment grounds, it sat useless on the counter.
After years of legal contest with the huge Southern California court of Orange County, a deal has been struck and the press will once again have access to the new civil cases when they cross the counter, one that was physical and is now virtual.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (CN) A long time ago, in late 2002, a supervisor at the superior court in Orange County told a group of reporters they would no longer be seeing the new civil complaints at the end of the day.
The clerk had decided to scan the documents first. The supervisor, named Connie, told the reporters they would see the new cases the next morning. But it did not work out that way.

With past president Andy Burchfield having retired from his seat on the Brighton Board of Education, the board on Monday selected local attorney Roger Myers as the president for the coming year.
Myers, who served as board secretary last year, was elected to a second, 4-year term on the board in November. He and his wife, Kelly, have four children who either attend, or are graduates of, the Brighton Area Schools. Like Myers, the three other officers â vice president, secretary and treasurer were chosen at Monday nightâs virtual organizational meeting. They include Alicia Reid, who was selected to again be vice president this year. The vote was 6-1, with newly sworn-in Trustee John Conely voting no.

Five hundred pounds of donated pork is preserved in a freezer at Enduring Freedom Ministries in Shumway. The donated pork was made possible by Farmweld of Teutopolis through the Illinois Pork Producers Association Pork Power program. The pork was processed, packaged and delivered by Kirby Foods IGA of Effingham. Three local food pantries received boxes of one-pound bags of ground pork thanks to a Teutopolis-based business.
Farmweld of Teutopolis, through the Illinois Pork Producers Association Pork Power program, donated a total of 1,770 pounds of ground pork divided between Enduring Freedom Ministries in Shumway, Effingham Catholic Charities and The Masterâs Hands of Newton. Kirby Foods IGA processed, packaged and delivered the pork.
