HIGHWAY chiefs are being urged to halt the “carnage” occurring in the New Forest after an horrific accident in which four ponies were killed. The collision - one of the worst animal accidents in the Forest for several years - happened on a notorious stretch of Roger Penny Way near Bramshaw. The ponies are thought to have been licking freshly-laid salt on the road when they were hit by a Land Rover Discovery. Two other accidents have occurred on Roger Penny Way in the past few weeks. Three donkeys were killed on December 13 and two sheep died in a hit-and-run on December 28.

Police have warned drivers to take extreme care to avoid further incidents . A statement posted on Hampshire Constabulary s Countrywatch team Twitter account said: Another three horses have been hit and killed tonight on Roger Penny Way. Animals are on the Forest Roads licking the salt that has been freshly laid. Please take extreme care to avoid any further incidents. A later post confirmed a fourth pony casualty and stated: Unfortunately it would appear that there were four casualties not three. The fourth horse initially ran from the incident.

Police were called to the incident at 7.08am on Saturday (December 12) to reports of a single-vehicle collision on Roger Penny Way. A white Mercedes van collided with three small donkeys close to the Fritham junction on the Roger Penny Way. The three donkeys died as a result of their injuries. Korine Bishop, Hampshire Constabulary Rural Policing Inspector, said: “This was a tragic incident which resulted in the death of three New Forest donkeys. The driver of the vehicle was spoken to at the scene by officers – with police enquiries ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
