Asda set to axe 1,200 jobs in major overhaul of popular in-store counters. (PA) Asda has announced plans to start consultations that could see around 1,200 staff lose their jobs in a major overhaul to 341 stores across the UK. A change to in-store bakeries could see staff lose their jobs and reassigned new roles with the supermarket chain saying redundancy is “the last option”. Derek Lawlor, Asda chief merchandising officer, said: “The current in-store bakery model has restricted our ability to respond to changing customer demands and offer them the speciality products and freshly baked goods they want to buy throughout the day.

Jobs under threat at supermarket with York stores A SUPERMARKET chain with stores in York has started consulting with more than 1,000 staff over its plans to overhaul its bakeries. Asda, which has stores at Monk s Cross and Layerthorpe as well as in Malton, said that it was treating redundancy as “the last option” during the consultations, which it said was sparked by changing tastes among shoppers. As many as 1,200 staff work at the in-store bakeries across 341 Asda branches. “If the proposals are enacted, the priority will be to move as many colleagues as possible into alternative roles within Asda, with redundancy the last option,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
