Holes found under A127 Bell Junction adds £200k to works

A127 Bell Junction works landed with extra £200k costs after holes found under road Work on the A127 Bell junction hit delays after holes were found beneath the road - adding £200,000 to the cost of the work. A slip road into Rochford Road at the junction in Westcliff was due to be completed in February but has only been opened intermittently since March 22. Despite the setback, the council says it is still on target to finish the work to speed up traffic through the busy junction by the summer. Ron Woodley, deputy leader of Southend Council said: “It is going reasonably well. The only hold-up we’ve had is that the road was built on concrete slabs and over the years you get voids underneath. 

Southend roads to benefit from £5m repairs

The first roads and pavements set to benefit from increased investment into Southend highways have been announced. Resurfacing will take place on 30 roads and 31 pavements as part of the council’s £5million programme to make improvements in the area. Here are all the roads set to be resurfaced:  Eastwood Road North: From A127 to aproximately number 40 Eastwood Road North Elmsleigh Drive: From Eastwood Road North to 186 Elmsleigh Drive Elmsleigh Drive: From Manchester Drive to No. 146 Elmsleigh Drive London Road: Lindisfarne Avenue to Chalkwell Park Lansdowne Avenue: Entire Road Southchurch Road: From Tesco Petrol Station to number 501 Southchurch Road Southchurch Road: From Junction Southchurch Avenue to Car Garage (number 329 to 337)

Knife-wielding robber jailed for 13 years

Marcus Piper, 27, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court yesterday. Piper had committed robberies, an attempted robbery and an aggravated burglary over the course of three months in 2020. His arrest followed the robbery of a taxi driver on Colchester Road in Southend on August 22. Another robbery took place on September 5 and an attempted robbery the day after on Palmerston Road in Westcliff. On September 12 he had used a knife to intimidate an employee at Station News, Shoebury, threatening to cut [his] throat and stab the victim. He then demanded money from the till and took three packets of cigars from behind the counter.
