Warren, Evans discuss the issues in the race for mayor

UPDATED 8:48 PM ET Jun. 09, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:48 AM ET Jun. 09, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:48 AM EDT Jun. 09, 2021 SHARE The third largest city in New York, Rochester, is gearing up for the Democratic mayoral primary in just a few days. The incumbent in the race, Mayor Lovely Warren, is being challenged by Rochester City Council member Malik Evans. Warren was first elected in 2014, when she became the first female mayor of the city. Evans won his city council seat in 2017 and also works for ESL Federal Credit Union. Previously, Evans served on the Rochester Board of Education. It is no surprise that in a city like Rochester, one of the top issues in the race is police reform.

An embattled Warren faces a mayoral challenge from Evans

Embroiled in scandal, Mayor Lovely Warren faces a tough battle against City Councilmember Malik Evans in the mayoral race. Mayor Lovely Warren stood at the podium outside her office at City Hall facing what would have been a circular firing squad of reporters had she given them a chance to pull the trigger. There were plenty of questions. Her husband, Timothy Granison, had been arraigned on drug and weapons charges earlier in the day. Prosecutors alleged he was a player in a cocaine ring and police claimed to have found drugs on him and an unregistered handgun and a semi-automatic rifle in the Woodman Park house he shares with Warren and their 10-year-old daughter.

Rochester Election Review

The Wanderer Rochester Election Review May 23, 2021 Editor’s note: The Wanderer invited candidates in contested races (more candidates than open seats) to write up to 350 words explaining their candidacy. Questions submitted by the League of Women Voters South Coast helped provide talking points for the candidates. Three candidates are running for two open seats on the Rochester Planning Board. The only entry submitted is below: Dennis McCarthy – Rochester Planning Board             My name is Dennis McCarthy and I am running for Rochester Planning Board. I decided to run for several reasons. The first is that I believe in service. I served more than eight years in the military and my eldest son is currently on active duty. Another reason is that I believe more residents should have an active interest in town government. I was somewhat surprised when I found out that several seats on some of the boards will go unfilled because nobody is running for them.

Candidate profile: David Hughes for Rochester Water Commission

Aidan Pollard May 19, 2021 ROCHESTER David Hughes has been in town government for 60 years, and he thinks the Water Commission should be as independent as possible. Hughes is opposed to his opponent Selectman Brad Morse’s campaign for the commission because he thinks the Water Commission shouldn’t be influenced by the Selectmen. “I would be a single vote,” Hughes said. “My opponent would be two votes.” Many of the responsibilities of the Water Commission and Board of Selectmen overlap and the two groups occasionally have joint meetings to hash out water-related issues together. “With open communication … we don’t need another board voting on issues that pertain to water,” Hughes said.

To date, I have not been all that vocal about the issue, but over the past several weeks my perspective has shifted, and I am now galvanized to speak out publicly and passionately on the subject. Why? The impetus was a conversation with my cousin, Tom Hsu, during which he described the palpable, lasting harm caused by ethnic mascots and team names.
