Looking where she stands today, it s hard not to marvel how far Jawaher Binhamoodah has come.
Today, the 32-year-old Rochester resident is a newly minted registered nurse at
Mayo Clinic, financially stable and, for the first time in her life, on an upwardly mobile path.
What a difference a few years can make. Binhamoodah, a Somalian/Yemeni immigrant, was once a cash-strapped newcomer to Rochester, working two jobs and struggling to learn a new language.

Rehan Saber started getting ready to lead a cooking class last Tuesday night. She took out the ingredients: chicken breast, cauliflower, seasonings and so forth, and put them on the table. She took out the bowls, knives, cutting board everything she would need. Then she turned on her webcam and greeted her students.

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Although a vigil Thursday for 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed by a Brooklyn Center police officer, was held in the Twin Cities, local students were able to join the event virtually.
The vigil was held at North Hennepin Community College in the Twin Cities, but Rochester Community and Technical College held a broadcast for its students to also be in participation.
SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA (KTTC) Some college campuses in the country have already publicly required students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning to campus in the fall. However, it is a different story for campuses in the area.
University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, Winona State’s Rochester Campus, Rochester Community and Technical College, St. Mary’s University and Riverland Community College all say they’re not requiring a vaccine.
“We know it’s a way back, a potential way back to some normal practices but we also recognize it’s a personal choice,” said Riverland Executive Director of Communications James Douglass.
