“You want to play this game about what would have happened had the protesters had been Black? The likelihood is they would have pulled back even more, and the building would have been trashed more,” Mr. Elder said Friday on a podcast.
He cited studies, including three from Washington State University, showing that police are actually less likely to use force against Black suspects, a reverse-racism finding that has been attributed to fears about legal, social and media backlash.
“What happened was horrific enough without somehow playing a thought experiment of what would have happened if the protesters had been mostly Black,” Mr. Elder said.

Toy fund volunteer already looking forward to next year
The highlight for volunteers always comes in late December, when parents come to pick up toys they will give to their children.
Therese Drapeau of Freeport just finished her second year volunteering with the Press Herald Toy Fund.
She’ll be back. And she is encouraging others to join the fun next year. “We can always welcome more volunteers,” Drapeau said.
It can be hard work, especially this year when social distancing meant smaller teams on each shift sorting, packing and handing out the toys.
But, said Drapeau, “It’s like a little family. … It’s actually a lot of fun.”
Roxanne Jones holds on to the good times.
You might stop by in the evenings and sheâll be dancing and singing to Gladys Knight or Patti LaBelle. In the fall, youâll find her cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sheâll quickly talk about the most recent games and can easily rattle off names like Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris.
Jones spends the day as a community outreach coordinator for Charlottesville s Department of Human Services. She helps people in need find and navigate services â and sheâs particularly skilled at the work because of her personal experience.
Jones spent time in prison in the 1990s from an addiction to crack cocaine, an experience thatâs shaped her life and career ever since.
