Portland preserves 27 acres of open space for public use

Read Article Portland has preserved 27 acres of land as public open space, the city announced in a news release Monday. The forested parcel at 204 Rand Road has been a preservation priority for the city’s Land Bank Commission, which is charged with preserving and expanding public open space. The acquisition helps achieve the city’s goal of ensuring that publicly accessible open space is available to all residents within a 10-minute walk of their homes, according to Pat Bailey, commission chair. “We think this is a huge addition to open space” in Portland, Bailey said. The parcel was purchased from the Avangrid Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the international energy company that owns Central Maine Power Co. The land will be added to existing preserves at the Fore River Sanctuary and Jewell Falls, the city said.

On the Road: Railroad crossing safety a concern in Jacksonville

The images are familiar: a truck destroyed after it straddles a railroad crossing and gets impaled by a train. A nonprofit public safety organization that has tried to educate people to steer clear of railroad tracks while walking or driving has a new safety campaign aimed at truckers. Operation Lifesaver s Low Clearance Vehicle Railroad Crossing safety campaign video at vimeo.com/498373714 shows drivers how to make safe choices around railroad tracks and trains. The video and safety campaign shows how long, low truck trailers can get hung up on railroad crossings and how important it is for drivers to recognize warning signs before they get to the tracks.
