(KGTV) - A new vaccination site opened in Vista, bringing the possibility of vaccinating 500 more people every day. Leaders say it’s small vaccination sites like this that are important for helping different people in the community get vaccinated, which is key for the Latino community. San Diego County data shows just 15% of people vaccinated as of mid-February are Latino, despite the fact that Latinos make up 34% of the population and more than half of the positive cases.

Cortez As the future of comprehensive immigration and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program remains unclear, students enrolled in the DACA program, known as “Dreamers”, at Southwestern College will soon be able to receive aid tailored to their needs at a new center at the Chula Vista campus, inaugurated this Thursday, April 25. The new Dreamer Center will be offering outreach, workshops, financial aid, meeting rooms, and legal assistance to DACA program beneficiaries. But for student Norma Vizcaino, a DACA recipient who will be staffing the center, the opening also represents the creation of a space where she can feel safe and welcome. “Often times we are taught to hide (our migratory status) and say nothing, so this place makes me feel like I can breathe,” she said.

Undocumented Immigrants' Fears Could Stop Them From Getting Vaccine

Many undocumented immigrants live in communities that have been hit the hardest by the virus and many have a higher risk of exposure because they are essential workers.  NBC 7 spoke to an essential worker who chose to remain anonymous due to this immigration status. He said he is not planning on getting the vaccine. He lives in Linda Vista. According to public health data, his neighborhood is near the top 25% of the highest COVID-19 cases by zip code.  Still, the Linda Vista resident says he is against the vaccine because he doesn t trust his personal information will remain anonymous.  He points out that his distrust comes from news reports last year that ICE had access to AB 60 license information which allows undocumented immigrants to drive legally in California.
