Pittsylvania County supervisor calls on Gov. Ralph Northam to lift mask mandate He claims only gas masks will protect someone from COVID-19, despite CDC studies proving effectiveness of cloth masks Updated:  Tags:  PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – An elected official in Pittsylvania County is pushing back against Virginia’s mask mandate. During Tuesday night’s board of supervisors meeting, Vice-Chairman Ronald Scearce, suggested that only an M40A1 gas mask can protect you from coronavirus and that cloth masks are not effective. However, that claim is false, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Studies have shown that cloth masks can be more than 80% effective.

WATCH NOW: Dismissing threat of COVID-19, Pittsylvania County supervisor Ronald Scearce labels Northam s restrictions as oppressive and ridiculous

On the day when Pittsylvania County reported two more deaths caused by COVID-19, Westover District Supervisor Ronald Scearce used his brief time for personal comments during the board of supervisors meeting to make light of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s safety mandates. Westover District Supervisor Ronald Scearce said during Tuesday’s Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors meeting he would not abide by Gov. Ralph Northam’s latest restrictions on group size during his holiday gatherings. Instead of seeing the mandate preventing groups larger than 10 as a measure used to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Scearce instead called Northam’s orders “oppressive” on Tuesday evening.
