+ March 10, 2021 THE Philippine National Police Internal Affairs Service (IAS) has launched its motu proprio investigation into the incident that killed the mayor of Calbayog City in Samar, his two police escorts and two other policemen.
A civilian caught in the crossfire was also killed.
IAS Inspector General Alfegar Triambulo said they were looking into reports that the anti-drugs policemen who figured in the incident with the mayor’s group were not in uniform and were wearing bonnets. They were also carrying high-powered firearms.
“Ayon po sa police operational procedure, sila po may mga requirements po. Dapat sila ay naka-uniform, hindi naka bonnet sa isang legitimate operation,” Triambulo said.

Independent probe on killing of Calbayog Mayor Aquino: Pangilinan
SENATOR Francis Kiko Pangilinan exhorts the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an independent and exhaustive probe on the ambush of Calbayog Mayor Ronaldo Aquino and his companions, saying killings without prosecution will further embolden criminals.
The senator emphasized the need for an independent and credible investigation to ferret out the truth behind the incident after the police changed its version that what happened was a shootout with cops and not an ambush. Why is the Philippine National Police (PNP) changing tune from an ambush to a shootout? Why were the police wearing bonnets and carrying heavy firearms? What could be the motive of the mayor and his aides in shooting the police, if the claim of the PNP chief is to be believed? Pangilinan said.
