The fashion industry is mourning the loss of Alber Elbaz, a highly esteemed figure who succeeded Yves Saint Laurent as designer of the label’s Rive Gauche line but is perhaps best known for elevating Lanvin into a more prominent house during his 14-year tenure as creative director. From 2001 to 2015, the Moroccan-born couturier experimented with dresses made from a single seam and which effortlessly toed the line between classic and modern. raison d’être of making the wearers of his clothes feel special.

Moroccan-born Alber Elbaz died on Saturday 24 May in Paris, from Covid-19-related complications. He was just 59.
The womenswear designer was at the helm of some of the most prestigious fashion houses in Paris, but his career was not all plain sailing, provoking both high praise and knock-backs at Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin.

Elbaz studied fashion design at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, Israel, before moving to New York in 1984. He became an assistant to US men’s and women s wear designer Geoffrey Beene in 1989 and worked with him for seven years until 1996. Beene died in 2004, and his company was bought by PVH in 2017.

Counting the likes of Meryl Streep, Demi Moore and Nicole Kidman as fans, his untimely death in Paris at 59 from Covid-19 leaves a gap in the industry, usually filled with joy and inspiration, as his recently launched, size-inclusive label AZ Factory was just starting to bloom.

Pic: FashionStock.com / Shutterstock.com Alber Elbaz, an Israeli fashion designer and the founder of Richemont-backed label AZ Factory, has died at the age of 59, Switzerland-based luxury goods holding company said. He took his last breath at the American hospital in Paris. Elbaz had served at a number of fashion houses including Lanvin, Geoffrey Beene, Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent.
Elbaz served as the creative director of Lanvin in Paris from 2001 until 2015, and took a five-year break before launching the AZ Factory.
