The proposed budget currently stands at about $23 million, up about 3.57 percent from the 2021 budget. That’s because Monday, the last day of the month, is Memorial Day and all county offices, as well as financial and other government institutions are closed. The Riley County Commission will discuss the county’s face-mask ordinance during its meeting this Thursday. The topic came up during Monday’s intergovernmental luncheon, which included members of multiple local government entities. Riley County commissioner John Ford says because of the ordinance, the commission has experienced push back from citizens who live in rural areas. “That’s a dynamic for use that, really, no one else has at this point in time,” Ford said. “It’s been kind of strenuous over the last couple of weeks.” Ford says he is seeing fewer and fewer people wearing masks. Manhattan city commissioner Linda Morse was displeased with the county’s decision to reapproach the subject at this time.

Around 200 acres burned in northern Riley County during a brush fire Sunday following the rekindling of a controlled burn. The fire, which took place in the 8500 block of Condray Rd,, forced the evacuation of one family, but no structures were damaged. While most local fires involve grass and brush, this one involved several mature trees. “I haven’t seen flames like this since I saw a true forest fire in Colorado,” said Lt Ross Hauck, a volunteer with Riley County Fire District #1. Two other brush fires took place Sunday, one of which occurred near 18055 Bjorling Rd., burning around 20 acres and prompting the assistance of crews from Pottawatomie County and the Olsburg Fire Department.
