Of all the metrics we commonly discuss at ExtremeTech, we’d argue TDP (Thermal Design Power) is easily the worst. If clock speed, core counts, IPC, and memory bandwidth are imperfect methods of comparing the capabilities of two processors, TDP at least as it’s communicated on current Intel desktop CPUs has moved past imperfection and is now downright bad.

You might not realize it, but every time you purchase a new desktop CPU, you also get a ticket for a giveaway called the “silicon lottery.” Two CPUs of the same model can perform differently when pushed to their limits thanks to something called “CPU binning.”

Binning is a sorting process in which top-performing chips are sorted from lower-performing chips. It can be used for CPUs, GPUs (graphics cards), and RAM.

If you have the Epic Games Launcher running in the background on your PC, there’s a good chance that it’s increasing the temperatures of your processor while also sending data to multiple servers. This issue was initially reported by a Reddit user, which was followed by others confirming similar findings on their own systems.
Reddit user u/Neoncarbon claimed that their AMD Ryzen 7 5800X idle temperatures were reaching over 50ºC with the Epic Games Launcher idle, with no game running. After closing it, temperatures were reduced to 37ºC. On this same thread, multiple users with AMD Ryzen processors have also posted their conclusions, with temperatures going down by as much as 20ºC after closing Epic Games app.
